The best way forward would be to take anyone to the store along with you who already plays.
ETA: Ok last one, and anything you buy…Obtain The SHOP TO Perform A SETUP, particularly if you are purchasing a cheapo guitar! A multitude of locations is going to do it free of charge if you purchase your guitar there. Otherwise, it could cost $25-$40. But it is worthwhile, since the guitar is going to be simpler to experience.
