Repair The Velvet Lining In Your Favorite Wooden Chests
Jewelry chests that are constantly used can end up with a broken hinge, a dent, or a torn or frayed velvet lining. Anything can happen to mar the beauty of your favorite jewelry box or even result in you not being able to use it at all .
Here are a few tips on how to fix the velvet lining in your jewelry box by yourself without having to junk the box or hunt down someone who can do it for you. Velvet is composed of many different fibers and adding lycra to it makes it stretchable and easier to handle. Velvet that is entirely woven out of pure silk is the costliest. Velvet is also made out of synthetic fibers like acetate, polyester, viscose, etc.
There are two kinds of Velvet lining:
1. Velvet with a backer (with or without adhesive) and
2. Velvet without a backer (with or without adhesive).
It is harder, in all aspects, to handle velvet without a backer. Cutting, stretching, and adding adhesive can be a total pain. And it is mostly used while installing the bottom or drawer as it permits the artisan to apply the velvet, cut it , and then insert the bottom and glue it into place with the velvet already installed for a perfect finish around the edges.
But if you want to replace a frayed piece of velvet lining, or preparing a makeshift jewelry box, you will see that the velvet with backer is the one that is easier to cut, stretch, and put glue on . The major drawback is that it is very difficult to get a perfect fit when you try to add the velvet after the drawer or bottom is already installed. But, the backer helps prevent bubbles in the velvet during installation and shrinkage, from over-stretching, during the installation process.
It is essentially a matter of personal choice; whether you want to use an adhesive backed velvet or a non-adhesive backed velvet and also depends on the glue you plan to use. Gluing in non-adhesive backed velvet can sometimes lead to an uneven application of the glue resulting in glue clumps, which you won’t be able to flatten out. The only good thing is that you can use the glue you choose to be the right one for this application.
If you are repairing the lining or if you are planning to install velvet in an old box, it would be best to use the velvet with adhesive backer on it. This especially holds true if you are totally inexperienced at installing velvet, and don’t have the right equipment. This is the easiest type of velvet to handle and if you are careful and patient, you just might be able to fix it perfectly!
