Discussing The Evolving Function Of The Maths Tutor Throughout Time
For over two millennia societies have relied on the assistance of the maths tutor to educate children and young adults. The knowledge of maths that has been shared has gone a long way to shaping western culture into what it is today. This article will examine the changing role of the maths tutor throughout time and discuss how their teachings have had wide reaching impacts on society.
The first tutors
It is commonly agreed that the maths tutor first came to prominence in ancient Greece, with names such as Pythagoras, Thales, Euclid, Plato, Socrates and Aristotle recognisable to most. Much of mathematical thinking in this time was heavily related to the world around us and as such involved much more than just the subject itself. Examples of this can be seen in Aristotle and Plato’s use of maths to understand nature and natural occurrences – although they did use very different methods. This meant that pupils would not only learn about maths from their tutor, but would gain knowledge in areas that could affect their whole belief system.
Tuition in the Victorian period
The works of the ancient Greek mathematician’s were well known by the Victorian period and much of it was used in teaching. Generally a maths tutor from this period would earn their money teaching the children of wealthy families. The subject of maths was particularly important in the education of young men and was seen as vital to forming them into well rounded individuals. The maths tutor was helping to produce a person that conformed to the social ideal as much as they were providing knowledge that could help the pupil in a practical way.
Modern day tutoring
The role of maths tuition today is to ensure that pupils get to where they want as opposed to be influencing philosophical thinking or shaping a person. The purpose of the maths tutor is to ensure that their pupil is capable of passing relevant exams, therefore securing a qualification that gains them access to further education or a specific job. In some respects the soul of maths tutoring that was previously in evidence has now been removed from the role.
