how to get my guitar to drop-d tuning?
i looked up a tab online for the song weightless by all time low and it says tunings: guitar 1: drop-d guitar 2: drop-d. what does that meen and how do i get it to do that?
Most metal music uses only the low E to drop-D, but this is not “true” drop D. They do this to a) get an extra bass crunch out of the last string, and b) allows you to play three-string chords with a single finger bar across the E, A, and D strings. Toni Iomi of Black Sabbath used this “half-D” almost exclusively, but did a full drop-D on a couple songs.
Begin loosening the low E string while playing the D string (tune it to the open D). When the pitch hits D, it’s “half” drop-D’ed.
For a full “drop D” tuning, do the same thing with the high E. Use the B string D (B string, fret 3) to tune the high E string to.
You’ll find all kinds of cool fingerings for chords with a full drop-D tuning, the one song that comes to mind that’s played with full Drop D is Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl.
