MLB 2009 Player Milestones To Watch Out For by Brangberg at RootZoo.com
After the holidays there are 2 things baseball fans have to look forward to. First they are ending the close of the free agent market and get to see if anymore of the items on their teams “Christmas Wish list” can be crossed off. Second they have February 14, 2009; the day in which pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report. After that baseball is officially in full swing, here is an early look into the 2009 season and which players to lookout for as they reach a Milestone in their career.
Gary Sheffield – Gary will be the one to watch closely right out of the gate. He is back with the Detroit Tigers and is 1 Home Run away from becoming the 25th member of the 500 Home Run Club.
Jason Giambi – Jason will be another one to watch closely right out of the gate. He is rejoining his old team the Oakland A’s and is 4 Home Runs away from joining the 400 Home Run Club.
Vladimir Guerrero – Vlad is another chasing the 400 Home Run Club. He is 8 away and looks to do so with a new slimmed down figure for his LA Angles.
Jim Edmonds – Only 18 Home Runs away to join Vlad and Giambi in the 400 Home Run club. He will do it but it may take a bit, that’s ok because his great fielding gives you another reason to keep a close eye on him.
Carlos Delgado – May be a bit of a reach but is 31 dingers away from the 500 Home Run mark, if he stays healthy he should reach this mark in 2009.
Alex Rodriguez – Like we won’t be paying close enough attention to the Yankees already right? Arod needs 34 blasts to pass Frank Robinson for 7th on the all time list. Not only that but if he manages 47 Home Runs he will become player #17 to reach the 600 career Home Run mark. Will this be another MVP season?
Jeff Kent – A great all around player and has 2 marks he can reach this year. He is 23 HRs away from 400 and 39 hits away from 2,500 hits.
Garrett Anderson – Potential to reach 3 career milestones this year and has a good chance at all of them. 28 dingers from 300, 13 doubles till 500 and 132 hits from the 2,500 career hits mark.
Albert Pujols – A player you should be watching anyways, young and exciting he is reaching a few milestones himself. 31 HRs from 350, 23 RBIs from 1,000 and 53 runs away from 1,000 it looks like it will be a good year for Pujols. Will this be another MVP season?
Miguel Tejada – 29 dingers till 300 and 85 hits from 2,000. Let’s hope he doesn’t stir up any drama or controversy like he did last season.
Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko – This is very interesting, both on the Chicago White Sox and both are only 2 Home Runs away from reaching 300. They will have a friendly competition to get there the fastest I’m sure. My money will be on Dye getting to 300 first but you never know.

Frank Thomas – No HR marks for ’09 but 5 doubles till 500 and 32 hits needed for 2,500. Still seen as one of the best hitters in the 1990′s but will this be his last season?
Jim Thome – Reach a major HR mark last year, this year he needs 12 RBIs for 1,500 and 3 doubles to reach 400. Thome is a great hitter that is continuing to pile on numbers and climb up the all time HR list.

Randy Johnson – I know what you are thinking and YES Randy is older than dirt. He will be joining the Giants this year and is only 5 wins away from being the 24th member of the 300 win club. It doesn’t stop there, Randy is also 211 Ks away from being only the second pitcher in Major League history (Nolan Ryan) to reach the 5,000 K mark.
Mariano Rivera – Regarded as one of the best (if not the best) closer in the history of the game. Coming back to the only team he knows, the New York Yankees (in case you live under a rock), he is only 18 saves away from joining Trevor Hoffman in the 500 Saves Club.
Jason Isringhausen – Another great closer looking to notch 7 more saves and become the 22nd member of the 300 saves club, without injury he should obtain this mark easily.
