Spending habits?
My boyfriend is wonderful, except for one major thing. He spends way too much money on things he shouldn’t. From a $1000 Black Label Society guitar, to $500 on a “hobby-level” remote controlled car, to $5500 on a 1973 Dart — all of this while we’re trying to save up to buy a house!! We’re doing okay financially, but there’s no way to save up a downpayment on a house, spending money the way that he does. I’ve tried talking to him about it multiple times, and he realizes what he’s doing, but he’s like seriously addicted to shopping. What can I do to make him stop spending so much money!
In this situation, I believe that there are a few very important questions that you may need to ask yourself that will help you to evaluate your relationship with your boyfriend and think about where you may end up as a result of choosing to stay with an addictive spender. It sounds like he is an impulsive spender. When he gets money in his hands, he is irresponsible. It sounds like he doesn’t know better to establish some investments so that he can yield more money. In addition, he sounds selfish. If he were taking your relationship seriously, he would consider your needs and dreams and realize that one of your dreams is to have a house. This, in turn, requires some action on his part…stop spending to save the money necessary for a house. Do you really want to be the victim of bankruptcy in the future when you have responsibilities for a house payment, car payment, quad payment, insurance, kids to support, etc.? If your boyfriend is spending lavishly and squandering his money now, it is not going to change after marriage. So, please consider this…if you want to keep your good credit, your good name, and yourself out of trouble, try to find someone who knows the principles of managing their finances well. You may not see it now because “you love him”, but please keep yourself clean. If you want to continue the relationship, suggest seeking financial counseling TOGETHER. If he is a strong man and he knows his weakness (spending money) and your strength (saving money), He will allow you to handle the finances for awhile until he gets to the point where he says, “I don’t really need all this stuff that I have purchased. My relationship is far more important to me than things.” If not, he is selfish…scram…your headed for trouble! I hope this has helped. Just know how valuable YOU are…not things!
