How can I improve on the piano w/ out a teacher?

i live in a tiny town w/ no piano teacher. the closest one is about 70miles away and with gas prices this high, its impossible to take lessons from anyone that far away. i taught myself for a while (i’ve been reading music before i could read letters) and i took lessons for about 4 years but the person i took lessons from moved.
i love piano! i can sit down and not stop unless someone tells me to. i’ve been playing for my high school’s choir and i think thats helped me along this year.
i just want to beable to improve from this level im at.
right now im learning the original schumann piano concerto in A minor. i dont know what level that is but i want something more challenging.
Any suggestions??
I really want to get better.
thanx

Fabulous that you love piano so much and want to continue. Three ideas for you:

1. I highly recommend getting yourself a copy of two technique books: Czerny’s “The School for Velocity” and Dohnányi’s “Essential Finger Exercise.” The first will improve your speed, the second your general technique and strength. (Be careful with Dohnanyi, however – when your fingers start to feel fatigued, it’s important to stop.)

2. When you buy piano music, look for scores that have fingering. Without a teacher, finding the best fingering for a piece on your own can be a challenge.

3. Listen to lots of recordings of whatever piece you are working on. Do it while looking at the music and write notes to yourself about phrasing and dynamics as you listen. This will give you some ideas about approaching each piece and will also give you a standard at which to aim.

As far as choosing music, do the standard repetoire –
-Mozart Sonatas
-Beethoven Sonatas
-Brahms short pieces
-Chopin Nocturnes
-Bach 2 and 3-part Inventions, followed by Preludes and Fugues
-Debussy Suite Bergamasque

With a little too much leisure, but no lack of pageantry, this love story for the ages (part of Columbia’s informal Song series that began with the 1945 Chopin bio-pic, A Song to Remember) concerns the marriage of composer Robert Schumann (Paul Henreid) and Clara Wieck Schumann (Katharine Hepburn). The latter, a concert pianist with a thriving career, gives it all up to support her husband’s artis…

Piano Lessons: Music, Love, and True Adventures

Piano Lessons: Music, Love, and True Adventures

$5.44

The difference between the piano lessons Noah Adams took and the ones most of us took was that he was 51, not 7, and — lucky Noah — his mother didn’t make him practice. This is not only a delightful account of his twelve-month nose-to-the-grindstone attempt to learn to play the $11,000 Steinway he bought on a whim, but also the story of his many-year process of falling in love with music and i…
