Why did the Da’Vinci’s Mona Lisa is at the Louvre instead of in anywhere in Italy?
Ive seen this documentary on Tv stating that the world’s most famous paint is at the Louvre,I have been under the impression that Leonardo was Italian is he? And the paint is part of the musseum’s most popular repertoire.
The piece is one of only a handful of surviving complete paintings by Leonardo. there are different theories of why he took the painting with him when he moved to Paris, at the behest of the King of France. My favorite theory is that the artist fell in love with his subject and didn’t want to part with the picture when he was finished with it.
Eventually, the salary Leonardo received from the King of France became too little for him to live on, and he sold the painting to the King for 4,000 gold pieces. The picture became part of the royal collection. At the time, the Louvre was a royal palace. After the French Revolution, the palaces of France (including both the Louvre and Versailles) became public museums, and the Mona Lisa has been on public display ever since.
The picture has left the building periodically for public tours. After all, it’s the most famous artwork in the world, and people want to be able to see it without going to France. However, the last time the picture traveled was to a showing in Japan in 1974. It hasn’t left the Louvre since.
On Monday, August 21, 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen by an Italian nationalist who felt the same way you do and wanted the picture returned to Florence. It was missing for 27 months. Suspects in the theft included museum workers, art historians, and even Pablo Picasso. The picture was eventually recovered when the thief made a rather brazen attempt to sell it to an Italian art gallery.

Buddy Holly Collection $19.49 Buddy Holly appeared, burned like a flare for a year and a half, and disappeared, leaving behind nothing that wasn’t heartfelt. Listening to “Peggy Sue,” “Well…All Right,” “Words of Love,” and, especially, “Everyday” (voice, acoustic guitar, bass, celesta, knee-slaps…perfect!), one can’t help but marvel at the lyrical openness, the taste, and the restraint of the music. Those are qualities gen… |
