Possible to do RCM grade 9 by August?
I started RCM grade 9 in January 2011, and practice around 2-3 hours 6 days a week. The university I want to audition for has a minimum of grade 9 RCM. I was hoping to play grade 10 RCM pieces for the audition which is in about a year, so if I finish grade 9 by August (instead of January of 2012) I’d have more time to practice grade 10. Is this a bad idea? I already have a piece per section and a bit more prepared, just need to memorize them. Would it be better to spend a year on grade 9 under these circumstances, or would it be okay to do it in half a year? I will talk to my teacher this week, but I just wanted other people’s opinions…thanks.
Also, if I do the exam during August I wouldn’t have to worry about studying for school exams like during January (which is what happened to me for grade 8 – didn’t do as well as I hoped to).
If you plan to take the exam in august it would be really stressful for you. Also it depends on your skill level. I remember when i was taking my level 7 RCM after 3 years of piano, it was really stressful and i had to cram a lot of stuff in just to get ready. Memorizing pieces isn’t as easy as you think unless you have like a photographic memory, once the sheets aren’t in front of you, you might have the notes all memorized but it’s hard to put the emphasis in the right place at the right time and all the millions of other details you have to know in order to play a piece amazingly. Half a year would be quite hard i would say, if you willing to take the stress then go for it, but don’t expect amazingly good marks, you might get them but it’s highly unlikely.
