Microsoft Gps navigation Patent “Eliminates Ghetto,” Draws Debate (Mobiledia)
A Microsoft Gps navigation patent maps out safe pedestrian routes to prevent high-crime
communities, drawing debate over possible discrimination against
poverty-stricken areas.
The Gps navigation, area of the Redmond, Clean.-based company’s Home windows Phone platform,
continues to be named by some because the “avoid ghetto” program.
The nickname came after Microsoft filed a patent for that program, saying, “As
a pedestrian travels, various difficulties could be experienced, for example
traveling with an unsafe neighborhood or having an open area that’s
susceptible to harsh temps.”
The program maker’s patent is not even close to being the only real Gps navigation means to fix pre-plan
pedestrian routes. The Nokia 6710 Navigator, for instance, arrived on the scene nearly
3 years ago using its walking routes.
However, it might be among the first to include demographic, crime and
other data, and it is judgment of the items areas are “safe” versus what areas are
not will probably draw debate.
Microsoft’s system takes database information into consideration when preparing a
walking route, including weather information, crime statistics and demographic
information. However, the organization did not specify what crime information or
census the machine views, resulting in the “avoid ghetto” nickname.
Microsoft states the brand new system basically combines the users’ routine with a few
