Is A Degree Qualification Worth £9000 A Year?
In the wake of the Con-Dem nation (i.e. Conservative “in association” with the Liberal Democrats), university students in the UK are noe facing an £9,000 annual fee should they wish to secure themselves a university degree. Since £3,000 used to be the maximum charge allowed, many potential future students are wondering is it worth it?
I wasn’t happy that I had to shell out three thousand pounds out each year for the media course I completed at university just 2 years back. There were often only 2 or 3 copies of each of the key readings in the library to satisfy over one hundred people who were on my course. I’d love to be told what I paid for exactly!
Two years after graduation, I am on a wage of 15k annually. This means that I am still not in a high enough earning bracket to start paying off my student loans (or, “Hitelek“, as my Hungarian housemate would remark!) My father always told me that a degree would ensure a higher wage down the line but the media seems eager to devalue degree qualifications these days.
Different charges should apply to different course types, depending on what each course involves. Drama degrees – which require little more than a makeshift stage and a tin of stage make up to do – should cost less than science related degrees, for example! Universities should be able to charge (to a degree) on the basis of their academic record and status. Oxford University courses SHOULD cost more than doing one at lower ranking educational establishments!
It is sad however that most universities across England appear that they will be charging the maximum annual cost. This means that the debt of students is going to be even more colossal when their course have ended (gyors hitel) they will have to apply for to cover these higher fees.
