Best book for chord/ harmony theory?
I am looking for a good instruction book on music chord theory. Something that discusses how keys have multiple families of chords and how chords are made of multiple notes. If an instrument is used for context I need the piano to be used, not guitar. I am just starting to learn some music theory and am a grown adult. I need something simple that does not rely on an instructor.
Suggestions please… and no “dummies” books – these are useless to me!
Why are you hating on the “dummies” book? The “Music Theory For Dummies” book is EXCELLENT… and it’s available at pretty much every major bookstore.
Yeah, I know, you can’t get past the “…for Dummies” part, but that one really is damn good.
Anyways, beyond that the Kostka-Payne “Tonal Harmony” book is great. It puts a more modern spin on things, which I think is important. A lot of people read music theory books and think “All my favorite music breaks these rules… this book is stupid… it doesn’t apply to what I want to do” then they throw it in the trash. The Kostka-Payne book is sort of like “traditional harmony from a jazz cat’s perspective”. I like it.
