by Ray Birger
In the “Cave of Adullam” in “Credenda/Agenda” (vol. 9, no. 2)
News Expensive!
Some might be heartened to understand that also Waters Revival Books, a Canadian secretary of state for some note, has apparently modified its earlier and incredibly strong stand in support of exclusive psalmody. This great news included their latest catalog, which contained their ad for any facsimile from the complete 1599 Geneva Bible. Because the ad noted, the marginal notes were written by Calvin, Knox, along with other leaders within the Reformation. At the back of this magisterial work, a metrical psalter is incorporated to be used in congregational singing within the Cool places of worship. In the beginning of the collection, we discover a most awesome assortment of hymns and tunes not based in the book of Psalms. The entire shebang is introduced using the title page which states listed here are “established and permitted to become sang in most Places of worship.” Because the catalog place it very well for an additional entry, “If you wish to realize that what you’re being trained may be the genuine Cool Belief, then visit the source documents!”
You’re herewith urged to purchase a duplicate from the 1599 Geneva Bible from Still Waters (swrb@swrb.com–for 159.95 clams, Canadian), and very soon after that you’re urged to obtain your worship leader to operate up some expenses for that Song of S. Ambrose, Te Deum, the Song from the Fortunate Mary, the Lord’s Prayer, and also the Ten Rules. Your guitar guitar chords aren’t incorporated.

Subject: “Asking for Clarification”
Dear Editors,
Relating to your barb against Still Waters Revival Books within the “Cave of Adullum” (Vol. 9, No. 2), I request some clarification.
Possibly you are able to show me the way the printer’s inclusion (which edition was printed working in london, not Geneva) of some non-psalms within the 1599 edition from the Geneva Bible indicates that Calvin (who died in 1564), Knox (who died in 1572), or any other reformers approved their use within public worship?
The initial, complete Geneva Bible (1560, and this is the origin document, not the later British edition) contained no tunes of any sort (to the very best of my understanding), although the Genevans used the Geneva Psalter within their public worship (not the Sternhold/Hopkins Psalter based in the 1599 Geneva Bible).
In addition, the 1599 Geneva Bible states that “The Booke of Psalmes” was “Established and permitted to become sang in most Places of worship.” It doesn’t mention anything concerning the public utilisation of the other tunes included in this Psalter — that have been likely added (without positive ecclesiastical sanction) through the ink jet printers. It was a typical trouble with ink jet printers throughout the Reformation. This really is highlighted in David Hay Fleming’s, masterful work, “The Hymnology from the Scottish Reformation” (an SWRB rare bound photocopy), which freely handles the issue of unapproved additions of non-psalms by ink jet printers (because it manifested itself in Scotland). Hay Fleming offers an in depth historic survey concerning exclusive Psalmody and also the Scottish Reformation. To find the best modern management of Calvin’s position (and the practice of exclusive Psalmody) see Michael Bushell’s “Tunes of Zion” (second edition, pp. 167-184).

John Calvin’s comments on why Credenda’s “guitar guitar chords aren’t incorporated” within the public worship of Protestant places of worship.
“To sing the praises of God upon the harp and psaltery,” states Calvin, “unquestionably created an element of the training from the law as well as the service of God under that dispensation of shadows and figures, but they’re not now for use in public places thanksgiving.”1 He states again: “Regarding the tabret, harp, and psaltery, we’ve formerly observed, and can think it is necessary later on to repeat exactly the same remark, the Levites, underneath the law, were justified in utilizing instrumental music within the worship of God it getting been his will to coach his people, when they were yet tender and like children, by such rudiments before the coming of Christ. However, once the obvious light from the gospel has dissipated the shadows from the law and trained us that God will be offered inside a simpler form, it might be to do something a foolish and mistaken part to mimic what the prophet enjoined only upon individuals of their own time.”2 He further observes: “We’re to understand that the worship of God never was understood to consist such outward services, that have been only essential to help forward a people up to now weak and rude in understanding within the spiritual worship of God. A positive change will be observed in this way between his people underneath the Old and underneath the New Testament for the time being that Christ has made an appearance, and also the chapel has arrived at full age, it were simply to bury the sunshine from the gospel must we introduce the shadows of the departed dispensation. Out of this it seems the Papists, when i shall have occasion to exhibit elsewhere, in employing instrumental music can’t be stated a lot to mimic the concept of God’s ancient people regarding ape it inside a senseless and absurd manner, showing a unique enjoy that worship from the Old Testament that was figurative and ended using the gospel.”3

Has Still Waters Revival Books transformed its position on exclusive Psalmody?
I have added the comment that follows because some performers of uninspired hymns (in public places worship) have really been saying that SWRB’s position on exclusive Psalmody has transformed, based exclusively on Credenda’s misrepresentation reported above.
There’s been no modification in our “stand in support of exclusive psalmody,” unlike that which was reported in “Credenda/Agenda.” Contrary, our knowledge of the covenanted Reformation and also the Cool doctrine of close breaking of the bread has increased our are a symbol of exclusive Psalmody — or at best our look at the way the places of worship should safeguard themselves from individuals who’d introduce improvements in to the public worship of God (which God Themself hasn’t implemented). In addition, if “Credenda/Agenda” ever reviews that people are actually in support of adding the Apocrypha to the Bibles (since the original 1560 Geneva Bible incorporated the Apocrypha, together with an email that it hadn’t been area of the inspired canon) don’t think them! They take too many protections in stretching the reality, underneath the guise of humor, and therefore they’ve made themselves (to a lot of) hard to rely on guides within the serious and sober matters associated with the defense from the eternal verities of God’s precious and holy Word. “But fornication, and all sorts of uncleanness, or covetousness, allow it to ‘t be once named among you, as becometh saints Neither filthiness, nor foolish speaking, nor jesting, which aren’t convenient: but instead giving of thanks” (Eph. 5:3-4).
