How To Take Your Guitar Skills To The Next Level
It doesn’t matter how much you love to play the guitar, at some point you are probably going to get bored with it. Most of the time it is just a temporary stop and you get back to playing, but if you don’t try to make it fun again then you do risk stopping playing for good.
Below are three ways that I have found you can make playing the guitar fun again:
Try a different style: When you start off playing the guitar then you typically just play whatever the course you are learning from teaches you, or whatever your tutor asks you to play. Once you get past the learning stage and you have the confidence and the skill to start playing songs by yourself then you will inevitably choose songs you like, and then probably stick with that style of song.
Don’t be afraid to try something new though, you could try something like classical or even Blues. You might not enjoy listening to it but playing it is entirely different, and you will learn new skills which you can use to adapt and improve your playing style. As you already know how to play the guitar then it is going to be relatively easy to pick up these new skills, so grab a course from a site like BluesGuitarDVD.org and get stuck in. That is just an example of a style you can try though, if you don’t want to learn that one pick another.
Find people to play with: Not everybody wants to join a band. Sure a lot of the people who learn the guitar yearn to be in a band and hopefully have all the fame and fortune that might come if they ever make it big, but for other people learning the guitar is just a way to express themselves or a new hobby etc. If you have never thought of joining a band before then maybe now is the time?
If you get on well with your bandmates then you will have discovered a new group of friends who share a love of music, and it pushes you to expand your comfort zone too. It is moving out of your comfort zone which will make playing the guitar seem fun again, and who knows you might start to find success and get a record deal!
Try writing your own songs: When you have been playing for years then even though you don’t realize it you do have the skills you need to start writing your own songs. It does take skill to start writing songs that people like, but skill comes from experience, even the best songwriters in the world had to start from nothing, and even they have to keep correcting and tweaking their work to make it into something people will love.
We all mess around on the guitar when we’re bored, and if by messing around you find a particular tune sounds good, then instead of moving on then stop and write down what you were playing. Gradually add to it and amend bits until you have a song you are happy with and then sit back with a smile on your face and realize you’ve done something that most people never will, you’ve written your very own song.

Disraeli Gears $4.73 Fresh Cream, the album that introduced this seminal super-blues trio to America, was perhaps a bit too blues-based to do the advance hype (“Clapton is God!”) justice. Two of its three best-known tracks, after all, were blues covers. It was Disraeli Gears that turned Cream into a “supergroup.” Here they pursue the psychedelic ideals of the era with total abandon (the LP cover art still stands as on… |

Riding the Rails [VHS] $14.99 Desperate times call for desperate measures, and perhaps no time in America’s history has been so desperate as the Great Depression. Riding the Rails lets survivors tell their stories of thri… |
