Clarinet Method

clarinet method of playing?

I wanted to take up another instrument so I picked up a clarinet, ive started learning the notes from the bottom of the range, but how do you make jumps from notes that aren’t next to each other without catching ones inbetween? I understand that to trill between A and G sharp for example, you would hold down the first key below the G note and quickly cover and uncover the G hole, holding the key down even without your finger on G hole, so that you don’t have to try and lift two fingers off and on at the same time because you might catch G natural. I tried doing an E major arpeggio from the lowest E, but when I go from E to G sharp, moving my finger from the lowest key to the next one up, in the time it takes for my finger to go from one key to another, a G natural is played. What are the official methods of getting around these issues?

On clarinet, there are instances where you have to move 2 (or more) fingers at the same time. I wouldn’t recommend leaving your pinky down on the G# key when you trill between A and G#. I guess you can get away with it, but learn to move both fingers for that trill.

Ok, now for the E arpeggio, I assume you are talking about going from the lowest E to the G#. Do you have a fingering chart? Are you aware that there are two ways to play the low E? In this case, you need to play the low E with the left pinky, then play in G# with the right pinky, so your pinky fingers are alternating. You can’t play both the low E and the G# with the right pinky–you will get the extra note (G natural).

Another example: If you were playing the E scale starting from the low E, you would play E with the right pinky, F# with the left pinky and G# with the right pinky. You would be alternating R-L-R. If this doesn’t make sense, you need to get a good fingering chart and familiarize yourself with these fingerings or get yourself a good teacher who can show you these. The low E, F and F# all have two fingerings–one with the right pinky and one with the left pinky. Also middle B, C and C# all have two fingerings (same as the other fingerings with the register key added).
