3-D cameras for cell phones (Durch)
When Microsoft’s Kinect — a tool that allows Xbox 360 customers control games with
physical gestures — hit the industry, computer researchers immediately started
hacking it. A black plastic bar about 11 inches wide by having an infrared
range finder along with a camera built-in, the Kinect creates a visual map from the
scene before it, with details about the length to individual objects. At
Durch alone, scientists used the Kinect to produce a “Minority
Report”-style computer interface, a navigation system for miniature robot
helis along with a holographic-video transmitter, amongst other things.
Imagine a tool that delivers more-accurate depth information compared to
Kinect, includes a greater range and works under all lighting conditions — but is
so small, cheap and energy-efficient that could be integrated into a
mobile phone at hardly any expense. That’s the commitment of recent work by
Vivek Goyal, the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Connect Professor of
Electrical Engineering, and the group at MIT’s Research Lab of Electronics.
“3-D acquisition has turned into a really hot subject,” Goyal states. “In consumer
electronics, individuals are very thinking about 3-D for immersive communication,
however they’re also thinking about 3-D for human-computer interaction.”
