Hey Book Publications… eBook Conversion Is No Big Deal!
Book publishers pack the halls of e-book conversion conventions concerned to learn the joys of this new art. Truth is, e-Book conversion is an easy choice. What isn’t is ways to basically earn cash from eBooks.
I’ve seen this happen before, most particularly with musicians and writers. The former uploads their music on iTunes. “Hey, its real now,” they say with a feeling of accomplishment. However, nothing happens.
Do it alone authors do the same, posting their books to Amazon. Its real, its for sale, still nothing happens. Why’s that? Because making something ready for sale does not compare to real sales. It is what I call the… “If you build it they will come delusion. Sorry, folks. The “Field of Dreams,” while a wonderful, feel good flick, has no place in fact.
You are now able to see why the book publishing industry’s current obsession with eBook conversion is a deja vu moment for me. Whats peculiar is that they know better. They understand that book sales are an obvious result of sound advertisement. But the mystique of the new paradigm of electronic book publishing leads most to (reach|come to|make} exaggerated inferences, the eBook world is somehow different.
Once this conversion mystique is seen for what it is, a relative nobig deal, the veil of misinformation is gone, exposing that eBooks require the same promotional ability as do traditional books.
The bottom line. Nothing happens without promotion. So dont be overly concerned the tiny things like eBook conversion. It only disguises the real problem, that book publishers, largely stuck in the old paradigm, {lack the promotional abilities vital to moving product in the 21st century. Namely, online marketing skills.
Conventional book publications have been unresponsive in light of two contemporary and certain occurrences.
Rogue eBook authors like John Locke and Amanda Hocking, both of which have sold over a million quantities of their e-books on Amazon, have proved to the dismay of conventional publications that they just dont need a book publication deal. And who could argue with that? The revenue speaks for itself.
The price of E-books, anywhere from free to about 3 dollars, has fully disrupted traditional pricing schemes, leaving no elbowroom for conventional book publishers who are encumbered with costs and overhead that rogue self-publishers are not.
Nevertheless the situation for book publishers isnt as atrocious as it seems. After understanding that the pricing of the ebook market has been disturbed by self-publishers, a sweet spot is exposed at a higher tier, namely Multimedia E-book publishing.
Here’s why…
MultiMedia eBooks enjoy higher pricing parameters, allowing book publishers a viable entry point to re-confirm their credibility and value.
Very few self-published writers possess the resources, fiscal or alternatively, to provide prime quality Multimedia eBooks.
Sounds great, but how?
I guess some book publishers will decide to go it alone by boning up on the abilities and resources critical to making MultiMedia eBooks. To those that do, best of luck.
But a much less expensive and risky offer would be to form coalitions with firms that already possess the required expertise. Likely suspects are music publishers, video archivists, and firms specializing in Multi Media eBooks production and promotional services.
For first to market points to consider, book publishers would be best served by leveraging their existing back catalog rather than making net new Multimedia eBooks from nothing. Not only does this strategy afford speed to market, and it can be adapted to leveraging existing Multi-media assets, effectively breathing new life into them without incurring extra costs of making other ones.
Then again, I imagine book publishers can continue to sit on the sidelines with the hope that one day the E-book market will stabilize at a far higher price. But I wouldnt bet on it. Whats more, a sector that takes a do nothing and see approach is unarguably, not in the market. Such is the case of the book publishing industry today. It just cant last. The clock’s ticking.
