John Celardo, 1918-2012 (Comics Reporter)
John C. Lardo, a talented and prolific artist who worked for decades in the
American comic book and comic strip industries as John Celardo, died on
January 6 at a rehabilitation center on Staten Island. He was 93 years old.
Lardo was born on Staten Island, graduating from Port Richmond High School. He
found work for the National Youth Administration drawing animals at the Staten
Island Zoo at West Brighton. From there he got his first gig as a cartoonist,
making sports cartoons for the Street & Smith group in 1937. The next year
Lardo joined the Eisner-Iger comics production shop, and by the early 1940s
Celardo was accepting assignments on his own from Fiction House and Quality.
The artist served in US Army during World War II in that conflict’s European
theater, where he was promoted to Captain. He returned to Staten Island after
the War, where he would remain for the majority of his life. Like several New
York area residents with a proclivity towards art, Lardo took advantage of the
opportunities in the city for further art training both before and after the
